Well Solomon,

Anger and Justice are not the same thing.

I think it was very convenient for the authorities to have The Boko Haram leader dead. The local Governor was widely believed to be implicated in the ugly riots and murders in Maiduguri in 2006. Then "Boko Haram" and other extreme groups did violence to Christians, looted businesses and destroyed many churches without being brought to any justice, whether angry or measured. These people have influential backers. It suits them to have the Mallam murdered before he can talk.

Col. Umar should have to understand that the killing of Boko Haram Leader is not unlawful,an unrest that was caused by him which claimed lots of lives and property is the same that claimed his own life. The angry Nigerians whom He has caused pain for can take his life even in Police Custody, out all the sect went to Police and army barracks to destroy without counter attack. So also, the angry Nigerians can also visit the Police Station to do same. There is question to answer in this case and there is lawful or unlawful action here. Thanks.

Dear Church family,

I would just like to say thank you to the church family that my dad loved so much. He enjoyed his many years at church both for the word of God and the people.

May he now rest in peace.

Thanks for your comment. I fear Ranald is positing that Moody, Spurgeon and Lloyd-Jones led the churches into a pietistic blind alley and I see that as plain wrong. The "social dimension" which came to the fore in 19th and 20th century ruined the churches in my view and we are living among the wreckage.

The men whom Macaulay knocks have ironically had more effect - even on our society and culture.

As for the remark about "simple evangelistic calls without providing a basis for belief" - you might just be able to make that stick to Moody (I have not read any of his sermons) but it is not true of Spurgeon and is the direct opposite of Lloyd-Jones' usual method.

I admit I may have harsh in calling Wilberforce a "self-focussed pietist" since I have not read all his journals and letters - but of those I have seen that is my impression. I am open to correction.

Actually, a politician may be self-focussed but still have some achievements to his name. I would see Bill Clinton and Tony Blair as two recent examples.

As there is respect for Spurgeon and the like, Ranald is dead on with evaulating their simple evangelistic calls without providing a basis for belief. As much as one is needing the gospel, so is his/her nurturing within it.

And how Can Wilberforce be a "self-focused pietist" if the abolition of slave trade was advocating the gospel in a social way? It's a natural progression...

Hi Graham,

I enjoyed a lot of your quotes. What you say about the unreliability of newspapers also applies to those Christian Mags by Barnabus, Tear Fund etc. They never quite get it right about N Nigeria.

My best friend in Maiduguri is Dr A. Haruna but there are dozens of good friends there now. If you ever need a contact go to our church site at
www.lighthousebaptistchurch.org.uk
and email me from there.

Joseph has left a mangled AOL email so I should not have passed this comment but it is such a good example of the lack of seriousness I was complaining about that I have passed it through moderation.

Since the Roman thought police have specialised in slander of "heretics" from the beginning the vague accusations in this comment are models of the species. The "errors" are of course readings of which the Curia disapprove. And the pompous claim to represent the believers of 1600 years is also typical.

The resort to the worst ad hominem slurs comes from the pride and partisanship which characterised More himself. Well done, Joseph, you are a credit to your tradition.

Tyndale was known as only a mediocre scholar and had gained a reputation as a priest of unorthodox opinions and a violent temper. He was infamous for insulting the clergy, from the pope down to the friars and monks, and had a genuine contempt for Church authority. In fact, he was first tried for heresy in 1522, three years before his translation of the New Testament was printed. His own bishop in London would not support him in this cause.

Finding no support for his translation from his bishop, he left England and came to Worms, where he fell under the influence of Martin Luther. There in 1525 he produced a translation of the New Testament that was swarming with textual corruption. He willfully mistranslated entire passages of Sacred Scripture in order to condemn orthodox Catholic doctrine and support the new Lutheran ideas. The Bishop of London claimed that he could count over 2,000 errors in the volume (and this was just the New Testament).

When you hold up that Bible in your hands, Remember your are accepting 1,600 years of Catholic guardianship of Sacred Scripture

Hi Incon,

Yes, it must be the same lady because all the other women drivers I know are so excellent.

To be fair, if Princess Di had been driving I don't suppose she would have been doing 95 mph in a Paris underpass.
